Why 'Unisex' Sizing Is a Budget-Wasting Trap for Corporate Apparel Programs

Senior Corporate Procurement Consultant

When tasked with ordering 500 branded hoodies for a company-wide kickoff, the path of least resistance is almost always "Unisex Sizing." It simplifies the spreadsheet, reduces SKU complexity, and eliminates the need to ask employees for their gender preference. However, from a procurement ROI perspective, this "efficiency" is often a false economy that results in nearly half of the investment being wasted.

In practice, this is often where apparel sizing decisions start to be misjudged. The term "Unisex" is a marketing euphemism for "Men's Standard Fit." As illustrated in the diagram below, a Unisex Medium is cut with broad shoulders, a straight torso, and longer sleeves. When worn by a female employee who typically wears a Women's Medium, the garment is boxy, unflattering, and ill-fitting.

The consequence is the "Closet Rate"—the percentage of corporate gifts that are accepted but never worn. Our internal audits show that while male employees have a 70-80% wear rate for unisex apparel, female employees have a wear rate of less than 20%. They might wear it to sleep or paint the house, but they will not wear it to the office, on Zoom calls, or out in public—which defeats the entire purpose of a "brand ambassador" program.

If you spend $40 per hoodie for 500 employees ($20,000 total), and 250 of those hoodies (the female half) are relegated to the back of the closet, you have effectively wasted $10,000.

The solution is Split-Sizing. While it adds a layer of complexity to the initial data collection (requiring a survey tool rather than a guess), offering both Men's/Unisex and Women's cuts ensures that every employee receives a garment they actually want to wear. The slight increase in administrative time is negligible compared to the 50% increase in program effectiveness.
